Google Project Tembo

Google's AI campuses · Flagship near Cheyenne, WY · Own sites, backed sites and TPU customers

Project Tembo in Wyoming is Google's largest committed campus: 2.7 GW across four halls, due by 2031. Google also runs TPUs at third-party sites whose leases and debt it guarantees, sells capacity to Anthropic and Meta, and bought Intersect to build power plants beside its campuses.

Project Tembo

Google's Largest Committed Campus Is in Wyoming

  • Site: 716 acres in the Switchgrass Industrial Park in Laramie County, near Cheyenne; reported to be able to scale to 10 GW.
  • Capacity: 2.7 GW across four data halls, with completion targeted for 2031.
  • Owner: Google, through its subsidiary Jupiter Star Holdings. The project was first known as Project Jade, and Google replaced Crusoe as developer.
  • Power: Tallgrass Energy, combining grid supply from Black Hills Energy, fuel cells and a Tallgrass power plant.
  • Status: permit hearing held August 13, 2026.

Other Campuses Are Announced in Dollars and Power Deals, Rarely Megawatts

Most Google campuses are announced as investment totals and the generation Google pays for. Data center load is published for only a few.

Power-first campuses

Google Bought a Power Developer to Build Plants Beside Its Data Centers

  • Intersect: Alphabet agreed in December 2025 to buy Intersect for $4.75B in cash plus assumed debt; the deal closed by March 2026. Intersect's grid-tied power business was spun out as IPX Power.
  • Model: Intersect builds the data center and its own wind, solar and batteries on one site, with gas for firming, so the load adds little to the grid.
  • Haskell County, Texas: the first pairing, beside the Quantum Clean Energy project, 640 MW of solar and 1.3 GWh of batteries, operating from June 2026.
  • Meitner, Gray and Roberts Counties, Texas: the first project started after the acquisition, in June 2026: more than 1 GW of wind, solar and storage plus onsite gas, "majority clean from Day One."

Google Guarantees Leases at Bitcoin-Miner and Neocloud Sites

Google places TPU capacity at sites it does not own by guaranteeing the tenant's lease or the developer's debt, often in exchange for equity.

TPU customers

Anthropic Is the Largest Outside TPU User

  • Ironwood (TPU v7): generally available November 2025. The eighth generation, TPU 8t for training and TPU 8i for inference, was announced in April 2026.
  • Anthropic: up to 1 million TPUs and "well over a GW" in 2026 (October 2025), then a multi-gigawatt deal with Google and Broadcom for next-generation TPUs from 2027, mostly in the US (April 2026).
  • Meta: a multibillion-dollar deal to rent TPUs through Google Cloud (February 2026); talks to buy TPUs for Meta's own sites are reported but unsigned. See Meta Hyperion.

Where Gemini trains

Gemini Trains Across Several Sites

Google said Gemini Ultra was trained in 2023 "across multiple sites, and multiple clusters within those sites" on TPU v4. It has not named sites for later Gemini models; Epoch AI says New Albany is possibly used by Google DeepMind.

Energy deals

Nuclear Restarts, Geothermal, Fusion and Flexible Load

  • Duane Arnold, Iowa: NextEra restarts the 615 MW plant under a 25-year contract; target early 2029.
  • Kairos Power: Hermes 2, 50 MW in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, sold through the Tennessee Valley Authority, targeted 2030, within a 500 MW by 2035 agreement.
  • Elementl: early funding for three nuclear sites of at least 600 MW each.
  • Fervo: 396 MW of enhanced geothermal from Cape Station, Utah, with an option for 600 MW more, online 2028.
  • Commonwealth Fusion Systems: 200 MW from the first ARC plant in Chesterfield County, Virginia, early 2030s.
  • Broadwing: about 400 MW gas plant with carbon capture in Decatur, Illinois.
  • Demand response: 1 GW of flexible load written into contracts with five utilities (March 2026), letting utilities cut data center draw at peaks.

Capex

Capex Guidance Raised to $195-205B

Alphabet raised its 2026 capital spending guidance from $180-190B to $195-205B in July 2026. Second-quarter spending was $44.9B, about 60% on servers and 40% on data centers and networking; Google Cloud's backlog stood at $514B. Third-quarter results come October 28, 2026.
