Shift
The Buildout Became a Political Issue
- Local: more than 800 local groups opposed data centers by mid-2026, and Texas paused state permits pending an audit.
- Bills: power prices were a central issue in 2025 governor races, and 2026 campaign ads mentioning data centers ran in both parties.
- Money: spending runs well ahead of disclosed AI revenue while signed cloud backlogs keep growing; the IMF and Bank of England have warned of a correction.
- National: Washington frames AI compute as a race with China; China calls US pacing proposals a Cold War playbook.
- Pace: in 2026 the leading labs themselves called for pacing frontier AI, and the White House chose a voluntary accord instead.
